How to Choose the Right Topics For Your Stated Essay Contest
How to Choose the Right Topics For Your Stated Essay ContestComing up with choices for essay topics is the first step toward winning a grade-school essay contest. There are scores of opportunities for essay topics, though not all of them will be appropriate for every student. If you are an English teacher, the best time to choose your subject is in the spring. That way, all your students will have different assignments and you will be able to determine the best essay topic from among the choices. It is sometimes necessary to plan ahead, if your classroom or year's curriculum includes optional courses. If so, select the appropriate topics so that your students will also benefit from that. Other subjects may require specialty skills, which may require a different essay topic. One year the topic was the subject of science and wishing. Students were invited to write about their personal wish. Some wishes included being a pilot, traveling around the world, or becoming a priest.I didn't want to limit shy students, but wanted them to be imaginative. They were asked to list five items they would like to do. When they were finished, I had them come up with reasons why they should be allowed to try their wish. And then I sent them to make a wish. When I wanted to focus on student interest, I asked my students to list all the fabulous and exciting places they wished to visit. I made it very clear that it was OK to choose a city other than where they lived, because most of the teachers have heard from many of their students that they wish to visit an exotic place. To keep your class relevant, you must use one topic that engages all the students in the class. One way to find out what topic will be most helpful is to ask the students what their dreams are. Then you can devise good topics that let them express their desires. One thing I like to do is get kids who really want to visit Alaska to write a short summary of why they wish to visit Alaska. Most of the students will be inte rested in a trip there, and that will help me pick a topic that will engage their wishes. Another choice for a topic might be something that students have never heard of or seen before, such as how to build an igloo.
